You might think of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) as an electrophysiologic reaction to sudden auditory stimulation. In order to provide information about hearing, hearing loss, and auditory rehabilitation, ASSR aims to produce an estimated audiogram. For those who are unable or unable to engage in conventional behavioral testing, ASSR enables the hearing care practitioner to produce statistically accurate audiograms. To ascertain whether and when a threshold is present, ASSR uses statistical measurements. The functioning and design of ASSRs differ between manufacturers. Note from the authors: SSEP (Steady State Evoked Potential) and/or AMFR (Amplitude Modulation Following Response) were prior names for ASSR. In some ways, ASSR is comparable to the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR). For instance, comparable recording arrays of electrodes are used by ASSR and ABR to capture bioelectric activity. They are both auditory evoked potentials: ASSR and ABR. Acoustic stimuli are used by ASSR and ABR and are preferably given through inserts.
